More Impressions From Tuesday
The primary was exciting and it was nice to get all the attention in Texas and have so many new, and returning, Democratic voters turnout. But it’ll mean little if we wind up with the same unaccountable government we started with. In other words if we don’t “turnout” a significant number of Republicans at the local, state, and federal level in the fall then it’ll all be pretty meaningless.
In yesterday’s post I left out the good things about election day. How nice it was to see so many people, regardless of the situation, come out and vote. It was worth it just for the reactions from the Republicans. Their petulance, puerility, disbelief, and confusion at the site of so many people voting Democratic in Williamson County had me laughing on the inside the whole time.
It’s always rewarding to experience the joy, eagerness, and excitement of a first time voter, and there were several. Also those returning, and those learning. Although there was frustration, (see post below), over having to teach so many voters about the process in the polling place, at least, at that point, the voter is ready a willing to learn.
From the comments in my earlier post to this post at Off The Kuff today, the discussion of who turned out, and why is continuing. One thing that came to mind that hasn’t been discussed much, especially in counties like Williamson, is how many of the “Republican” voters that crossed over were actually Democrats that had been voting in GOP primary’s over the years because it was the only game in town? Now that they had a choice, and will continue to have a choice, let’s hope they will continue voting in the Democratic Primary.
Comments, criticism, and election day observations are welcome in the comments. Keep them coming.
