What we’re hearing – Precinct 4 GOP commissioners race

Posted in 2010 Primary, Commentary, Commissioners Court, Election 2010, Precinct 4, Williamson County at 2:06 pm by wcnews

It’s been almost a week since the filing period began, (it goes until January 4th), and Precinct 4 GOP incumbent Ron Morrison about has yet to file for reelection.  For and incumbent there’s no reason not to early on.  If they don’t it will only fuel speculation about their commitment to reelection, and give a possible primary opponent(s) an opening.

We’ve been hearing that Ron Morrison may be rethinking running for reelection in 2010.  It makes sense since he was little more than a Gattis rubber-stamp and had few, if any, accomplishments over the last four years to run for reelection on, (see the first thing on this list).

We’ve also heard that someone has filed treasurer designation to run against Morrison in the GOP primary.  Again not surprising given Morrison’s record.  It also seems likely that if Morrison’s not going to run for reelection there would be a crowded field on the GOP like there was in 2006, when there were 5 candidates in the GOP primary for Precinct 4 commissioner.

We’ve also heard through the years that Morrison does not like the scrutiny he recieved during his time in office, especially over the landfill and T. Don Hutto.  Like many in the WCGOP the scrutiny and accountability that the citizens of Williamson County are now demanding is cramping their “keep everything in the family” way of doing business.  Morrison did hold a fundraiser in August and as of his last campaign finance report [.pdf] in July still had over $38,000 in the bank.  The speculation will likely continue until Morrison makes a decision, one way or another.

Of  course on the Democratic side Jeff Maurice filed last week.
