What Is John Carter Doing?

Posted in Election 2006, Williamson County at 3:30 pm by wcnews

Last week Rep. Carter (R-Exxon-Mobil) was hanging out at a Shell gas station trying to blame the current price gouging and record profits by Oil Corporations on the lack of drilling in ANWR, among other places, as well as environmental restrictions. You’ll notice that he left out anything that has to do with using less gas like sustainable energy or higher mileage standards for automakers, of course, that wouldn’t do much to increase his portfolio. Mary Beth Harrell has issued a press release on this, Carter’s Oily Conflict of Interest.

“With two sons in the Army, one stationed in Iraq, I understand what it means to sacrifice for my country. I am running for Congress because the voters deserve to have an independent voice in Congress fighting for positive change and the priorities of Texas families - not for personal gain, “said Harrell. “Carter may not feel our pain at the gas pump but when the voters find out he chose Exxon-Mobil over them, he is going to be living off of that Big Oil trust fund sooner than he thinks.”

But If that’s not bad enough Rep. Carter is doing even worse things for working families . Now, I know what you’re saying, “It’s just another Democrat railing against tax cuts”. Well, these are not tax cuts. Because the money, a mere pittance unless your super-rich, you get today will have to be paid back in the future, with interest. You can see these two great images here and here, which will help explain what happened. Think of it this way, if you’re in debt, is the best way to get out of debt to borrow more? You can read about exactly what Rep. Carter voted for here. But let’s suffice it to say that with the budget deficit growing by the day the Republican plan is to borrow more from the middle class and give more to the wealthy. But in order to borrow more they’re going to have to raise the debt ceiling again:

A $2.7 trillion budget plan pending before the House would raise the federal debt ceiling to nearly $10 trillion, less than two months after Congress last raised the federal government’s borrowing limit.

This should leave no doubt about who’s for the working people in this congressional race, Mary Beth Harrell. But now that Tom DeLay has resigned out congressman has gone and got himself a new cause, ethics. I know, what you’re saying, “What does John Carter know about ethics?” Isn’t he the one who stood behind, beside and around Tom DeLay the whole time he was being forced out of Congress because of this ethics problems? Why does he care about ethics now? (I wonder if he’ll be sending a letter the Speaker about his committee chairman?) Well he’s probably worried about the things listed above and being called on it. He’s not used to that. Nor are most Republicans in these parts.

This is a stunning list that goes to show exactly what our congressman is about. Covering for oil corporation price gouging, rubber-stamping fiscally reckless policies, and jumping on the ethics band-wagon once his mentor had been forced out of congress. It’s time for a change.
