Being A Registered Voter Is First On The List

From the AAS, City councilmember resigns:

Hutto City Councilwoman Tina Slayton has resigned after it was discovered she was not a registered voter when she was elected in 2007, City Manager Ed Broussard said.

It was discovered Slayton was not a registered voter during the recent election cycle, Broussard said, and after talks with the city attorney, Slayton decided it was best for her to step down. Broussard said she is leaving the council on friendly terms.

As the comment at WW states, “Wow. She didn’t even bother to register to vote so she could vote for herself?”. The other question is whose job was it to vet the candidates to make sure they met all the qualifications? It’s the first item listed under qualifications, Section 5.02 - Filing For Office [.pdf]:

a) Eligibility to File. Each candidate for an elective City office shall meet the following qualifications:

1) be a registered voter of the City;
2) have resided for at least twelve (12) months preceding the election within the corporate
limits of the City, including territory annexed prior to the filing deadline; and
3) not be in arrears in the payment of any taxes or other liabilities due the City. “In arrears”
is defined herein to mean that payment has not been received within ninety (90) days
from due date;
4) be at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of filing.

She ran unopposed.

    Has anyone else heard the rumor that Brian Ruiz, the democratic nominee for Congress, might be nominated?

    He’s doing such a great job of talking to people in his campaign, I think that he’d be a great choice! The people of Hutto already know him and of course he actually is registered to vote!

    Hadn’t heard that one. Brian would make a great member of the Hutto city council. He’s going after Carter though, and he’s never wavered on that.
