Voter registration ends October 6

You can’t “vote the bums out” if you’re not registered to vote. RRL has a good write-up, Voter registration deadline approaching.

Voter qualifications, which are listed on registration applications, are as follows:

  • You must register to vote in the county in which you reside.
  • You must be a United States citizen.
  • You must be at least 17 years and 10 months old to register and you must be at least 18 on election day (Nov. 4).
  • You must not be a convicted felon. Or, if you are a felon, you must have completed all of your punishment - including any term of incarceration, parole, probation or other supervision - or you must have received a pardon.

Regarding the residency criteria, [Kay Estes with the county’s Election Administration office] said mail ballots are available for college students whose primary residence is elsewhere. Mail ballots are also available for the homebound, or for people - such as those serving in the military - who will be out of the country Nov. 6.

“For college students, unless they just want to change their residency, they have the ballot-by-mail option,” Estes said. “One thing that is important for them to remember is the last day to apply for a ballot by mail is Oct. 28. It must be received in our office, not just postmarked. If they have it postmarked on the 28th and we get it by the 31st, they would be late.”

She said voter registration and ballot-by-mail applications can be obtained by calling her office at 943-1630.

Registration applications are also available at post offices, Estes said.

Additionally, they can be downloaded and printed from the Internet by going to Wilco.org and clicking on “election information.”

In order for people to vote in the Nov. 4 elections, their voter registration applications must be post marked no later than Oct. 6, Estes said.

Here’s the link to the county’s voter registration page, where the voter registration application can be downloaded and printed, as well as where to send or hand deliver it.
