Capitol Annex Has Much More On Mary Beth Harrell’s Repudiation Of John Carter And A Debate Challenge

Great post from Capitol Annex. He also has a link to the actual letter (posted here too) that John Cater sent to his supporters.

Charles Kuffner has also posted on this and in his comments he says this:

The conventional wisdom is that a candidate who feels comfortable about his or her odds of being elected, especially against a lesser-funded opponent, should avoid mentioning that opponent in public. If that’s the case, then Rep. John Carter is getting a little worried, since he’s taken to attacking Mary Beth Harrell in a letter to his supporters.

I would tend to agree that Rep. Carter is looking over his shoulder. Also at the bottom of Mary Beth Harrell’s letter was a challenge to Rep. Carter:

Harrell is also calling on Carter to agree to a series of debates in the District.

Two questions that come to mind are; do Rep. Carter’s handlers trust him and his slippery tongue on stage with this “tough-as-nails” prosecutor and how bad are his poll numbers looking? And judging from what happened to Ralph Reed this week - “It’s clear that politicians that put money before their morals should be very worried by these results,” - any moralizing candidate that isn’t so moral and has shady friends is probably, at the least, a little on edge.

[…] As has been reported here several times, most recently this past weekend, John Carter’s recent fund raising letter made false accusations about Mary Beth Harrell. It was also reported that Mary Beth Harrell asked him to rescind those false accusations, which he has not done. Her opponent, so far, has not accepted the challenge to debate Mary Beth Harrell. Well the heat is about to be turned up on Mr. Carter. What he may not have realized it that when he attacked a soldier’s mother, especially one who’s son is in a war zone, it’s like attacking all soldiers. […]

[…] Democratic challenger Mary Beth Harrell Wednesday asked Rep. John Carter (R-Round Rock) to appear with her in a candidate forum on Killeen PBS affiliate KNCT-TV. Harrell has been challenging Carter to debate for nearly a month. Tara Copp at the Washington Bureau of the Austin American Statesman contacted Carter’s Washington office for a response. Carter’s spokeswoman Amy Ellsworth indicated that Carter intends to decline. “People earn the right to debate me,” Carter said in the interview. “I will determine how and not them.” […]
