John Carter and right-wing extremists
There’s a rule of thumb EOW goes by when it comes to Congressman John Carter, if he’s outraged about something there’s probably a logical explanation. And his overreaction to a recent DHS report fits the rule. In this case it’s his press release responding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano’s press release regarding a DHS report on the Threat of Right-Wing Extremism [.pdf].
Before throwing a tantrum Carter should have gotten a few facts straight. This report, along with an earlier one released in January 2009 on Left-Wing Extremism [.pdf], were both requested by the Bush Adminisgtration. This is just routine work done by this agency to keep law enforcement informed about possible threats. This is what DHS is supposed to do in order to try and protect Americans from attacks, from extremists of all stripes, that may want to do harm. We can only imagine how Carter would react if something was to happen and law enforcement around the country wasn’t warned.

The Republican Party is in turmoil. Their messaging is driven by outrage. We’ve been outraged for years (four exactly) here at Eye On Williamson, but we’ve learned to temper our emotions by researching our posts before publishing. If only our elected representative in Congress, with his crack staff, would bother to do the same, we might have a more intelligent debate about issues such as border and national security.
Instead, we have Gov. 39% “The Secessionist” Goodhair Perry, a male version of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, expressing his newfound displeasure against budget-busting spending initiated under Republican Pres. George W. Bush; Sen. John Cornyn and John Carter’s misplaced anger over a Bush-appointee’s memo that restates and reinforces another Bush administration memo. In Perry’s case, it is clear that he seeks to win re-election by running as far to the right as possible, then advancing to national politics. In Carter’s case, it is clear he is concerned about retaining his tenuous hold on an increasingly Democratic 31st Congressional District and is grasping at anything to justify his continued relevance.
Their plans require befuddling their constituents, employing the fake-populist tactics of false empathy, scapegoating and inflaming base emotions. Our disgust is punctuated by bemusement over their predictability. Take solace in their desperation. These are the last gasps of a failed ideology that has been completely discredited.
